The CrewSIM service works only when the ship is in open waters
where no land-based operators are available and the MCP GSM network is switched on.
2. Can I use the CrewSIM card with any phone?
You can use your CrewSIM with most GSM mobile phones providing that they are unlocked. *
3. How can I subscribe to the CrewSIM service and how much does it cost?
Subscribing to the CrewSIM service is easy and free of charge. You need to fill out a subscription form available at the crew office onboard your ship. When submitting the completed form, you will receive a CrewSIM card ready to be inserted into your mobile phone and pre-loaded with five free text messages (SMS) to get you started.
4. How can my family call me when the ship is at sea and I have my CrewSIM on my mobile phone?
Together with your CrewSIM card you will receive a phone number, which you need to give to your family and friends. In order for them to call you or send you an SMS, they need to dial the international access code followed by your CrewSIM phone number.
5. When transferring to a different ship, will I be able to continue using the same CrewSIM card?
You can use the same CrewSIM card and phone number on any ship fitted with the MCP network, even if transferring to a different company.
*If you enter your PIN-code and receive a message such as “contact network provider”, “insert SIM”, “SIM not valid” or similar – you are trying to use the CrewSIM card in a locked phone. Your operator may have subsidized the cost of the handset when you originally purchased your phone and as such ‘locked’ your mobile to its network to prevent its use with other mobile operators’ SIM cards.
Please call the mobile operator with whom you have your current subscription to check if your phone is locked. If this is the case, request an unlocking code. Alternatively, unlock it yourself by entering a website for unlocking or take your phone to an independent phone shop.
Unlocking is perfectly legal; it does not involve changing the IMEI of the phone, which is illegal. Network operators are generally obliged to unlock your phone but can charge an administration fee for this.
Top-up/Charges
1. How can I top-up my account?
You need to buy a top-up voucher from the onboard vending machine and follow the instructions on the electronic voucher receipt.
2. How can I check the balance on my account?
You can dial *111# anytime free of charge and your balance will be displayed on the screen of your phone. During a call, you will receive a warning message one minute before your balance is zero.
3. How long are the credits on my account valid?
The call credits are valid for nine months after charging and any remaining credits will be lost after this period. If you recharge your account within nine months, any unused credits will transfer forward for an additional nine-month period, starting from the date you recharged.
4. How much do I pay for using the CrewSIM service?
As it is a prepaid service, there are no monthly fees and no connection fees. Prices per minute vary according to the destination. The only fixed price service is for sending an SMS. You’ll find a complete price list onboard your ship.
5. How much do I have to pay for incoming calls/SMS?
Incoming calls and incoming SMS are free of charge for the CrewSIM subscriber but not for the caller. The caller needs to check with his or her operator for prices.
