Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) provides cell phone connectivity onboard maritime vessels while at sea via its CellAtSea™ service. MCP installs a series of antennas throughout a ship to ensure cellular signal coverage onboard. Calls are then sent via the ship’s satellite connection back to shore for delivery and billing.

Accessing the service

For most European passengers, the CellAtSea® service is automatically available. You will be able to use your mobile phone in the same way as when traveling abroad. Passengers from the USA and Canada may have to contact their cellular provider to activate this service, as your mobile phone must be able to roam internationally to utilize the CellAtSea® service. Furthermore your cellular provider must have a roaming agreement with MCP.

What the phone will display

When connected to CellAtSea®, GSM cell phones will either display “MCP” or “90112”. CDMA cell phones will display “Roaming” or “Digital Roaming”.

The CellAtSea® service will automatically shut down when a ship is entering port, and will automatically power on when a ship leaves port. This is necessary so as not to interfere with shore based cellular networks. The distance from shore at which the system is powered on or off will vary depending on the specific laws for each port of call.

How to make calls

What your bill will say

You will receive your bill as usual from your cellular provider; they will determine what is indicated regarding maritime roaming on your bill.

What services are available*

  • Voice Calls:
The MCP network relays phone calls via the ship’s satellite connection. If you cannot connect, please try again at another time.
  • Text Messages:
SMS text messaging is supported on GSM phones (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Optus). If you are using a CDMA service (e.g. Sprint, Verizon), please contact your cellular provider for availability.
  • Data Services:
If your cellular provider supports data services, you can use compatible devices such as Blackberry’s. Please contact your cellular provider for pricing, as you may incur in charges for incoming emails and data.

* As this is a satellite based service, the connection is not guaranteed to be available at all times. If you cannot connect, please try again later.

Neither MCP nor Princess set retail pricing. Retail pricing is set by your cellular provider, and while we would like to be able to provide guidance, it is impossible for MCP or Princess to comment on independent rate plans. When in doubt please contact your cellular provider.
